Standardized Testing

The importance of standardized test scores compared to other pieces of the college application will differ from one university to another. The pandemic forced a pause on colleges requiring standardizing testing. More than two-thirds of colleges and universities will not require the SAT or the ACT for the next two admission cycles.

Many colleges and universities are remaining test-optional or test-blind, however some continue to require test scores. Standardized testing gives students and admissions officers options and flexibility to choose how they want to present their applications.

Schools that are test-optional do not require any test scores from applicants, but they will still consider test scores as part of the candidate’s overall portfolio if they are included.

Schools that are test-blind will not consider an applicant’s test scores even if they are submitted. Admissions decisions are made on the basis of GPA, letters of recommendation, extracurriculars, and supplemental essays.

For high-achieving students, excellent test scores and GPA are still a key part of the college admission equation.
