Financial Aid and Scholarship Information

Financial Aid and Scholarship Information

College tuition prices are higher today compared with two decades ago. There are many types of financial aid available to students/families: loans, scholarships, grants, and work study.

Information about FAFSA, CSS Profile and private scholarships will be provided.

A four-year college education costs anywhere between $40,000 and 350,000, depending on whether it is a public or private institution. While some families can afford these expenses, many must rely on financial aid. Families should explore several ways to finance a college education. We will supply information about protecting families from scholarship scams.

If seeking financial aid, families/students should complete and submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), and the CSS Profile in October of the student’s senior year. Financial aid is ‘need-based” as opposed to “merit-based.” Merit scholarships are awarded to students by a college because he or she meets certain predetermined criteria such as stellar grades, exceptional athletic ability, or artistic talent. Financial aid funds come from the federal government, the university itself, and, in some cases from state programs. Aid is awarded in a “package” comprised of grants ( which are not paid back), student loans, and work study in varying proportions. Private corporations offer scholarships  as well. The NET Price calculator is a tool that families can use to estimate their net price for college costs.
